Need Help running your business?

Just added for Raffle: "Hire your first Employee" by Rhonda Abrams

So you always wanted to be your own boss. You finally start working for yourself and things are going GREAT and then... you realize that you need a website, you need help with sales, you don't have time to learn the latest social media tools, you hate book-keeping, you shudder at the thought of checking your emails and voice mails that seem to file up forever ... and this is on top of what you do everyday in your own business... now you discovered you can't do it all! You consider getting help but not sure where to begin.

Join us at the next BNC Entrepreneur event where our panel will explore issues on figuring out where you need to hire help, deciding whether to use an employees, contractors, or even bartering, as well as legal issues to consider.

On the panel will be BNC member Paula Shur of Recruatistar, Chuck Krugel an HR Attorney, and our moderator Michael Carruth a serial entrepreneur.

Topics we will discuss:

  • Do you need to hire outside help and what type of help (contractor vs employee)
  • Pre-recruitment process as well as determining job skill sets
  • Interviewing process including what you can ask
  • Selection and rejection process as well as setting expectations
  • Legal considerations including employee & contractor agreements and employee dispute issues
  • Accounting requirements (payroll, unemployment)

This business idea emerged out of her many years doing management search and seeing the shifts in how companies find talent and their use of technology and the Internet. Today Paula helps her clients with an advertising strategy for an open position, does all of the prescreening and profiling of viable candidates and then supplements this pool with Internet sourcing. Paula is a talent acquisition professional with more than twenty years of experience.

Paula holds a MSW from the University of Illinois, and a BA in Psychology from Roosevelt University. Paula is an active and participating member of HRMAC, Staffing Management Association (SMA), CCA, Chicago land Chamber of Commerce and SHRM. Through SMA she has been co-leading an ongoing career workshop for the clients of the House of Good Shepherd.

He has over 15 years of experience in the field. For the past 10 years, he has run his own successful management side practice: charlesakrugel.com

Charles earned his Juris Doctorate from Ohio Northern University, after receiving his MA in Industrial/Organizational Psychology from the University of North Carolina. Moderator:

MikeCarruth.jpg Michael Carruth began his entrepreneurial career as a writer and photographer at the age of 14, then founded his first company at age 15 and headed his first corporation at age 19. Since striking out on his own in the fall of 1988, Mike has founded companies in creative services (The Creative Alliance), technology training (MAC University and Digital Bootcamp), Home Decor (Waxy Buildup Candles), Fancy Foods (Freddoloso Foods) and more. Across these industries he has had substantial experience hiring help from employees to contractors (including offshoring) to virtual assistants and has even engaged in bartering.

Mike’s current passion brings his career full-circle— back behind the camera, writing compelling content and creating value for advertisers. He founded Fiodan Action Sports Group, a network of Websites covering the adrenaline-charged world of Extreme Sports, in March 2008, and the company has enjoyed robust growth in traffic and revenue each quarter ever since.
